03 – Beach holiday Benalmádena

GUIDES BENALMADENA

Benalmádena is best known for two things: The beautiful beaches and the lively nightlife!! This is why young people and families alike like to come to the holiday resort Benalmadena to spend their summer here. But we also met history fans in the historical district or on the local mountain of the city. Amusement parks and other offers attract many holidaymakers to the Spanish Costa del Sol every year. If you want to have fun, party and sun spiced with Andalusian history, then you should look for accommodation in Benalmádena!

Benalmádena is located in Andalusia on Spain’s Mediterranean coast and is one of the largest holiday resorts on the Costa del Sol. It borders Torremolinos to the north-east and Fuengirola to the south-west, both also tourists’ hotspots. The international airport of Malaga is only 20 kilometres away and Benalmádena is easily accessible by hire car, by train and bus from there.

The long beaches, the reliably good weather with 2,800 hours of sunshine a year and the construction of a tourist-friendly infrastructure with a variety of gastronomic and leisure offerings are reasons for the popularity of Benalmádena. This is especially the case in summer and with the British, but it is also popular during the rest of the year and amongst holidaymakers from many other countries.

The resort consists of three areas. In the district of Benalmádena Pueblo is the picturesque old town which is located in the hills. Benalmádena-Costa is the area densely developed with hotels and holiday apartments at the coast and where the beaches are to be found. The third district of Arroyo de la Miel is the actual centre of the town with its residential and commercial buildings, but also with hotels and tourist attractions.

Tourists coming to Benalmádena usually come for a beach holiday, but they get so much more than just that. Here for example, the popular, award-winning sports harbour of Puerto Marina has over 1,000 mooring berths for private yachts and motor-boats, a sight to get the pulses of yachting fans racing. As well as this there are also numerous boutiques, restaurants, bars, discos and nightclubs to be found here.

There is something special about castles and you will be able to see it with your own eyes! Old mysterious constructions won’t leave you indifferent as soon as you see them.

The historic city centre with its whitewashed houses adorned with flowers is a perfect place to take a stroll. In the neighbourhood is also the Castillo de Colomares, the Spanish version of a fairytale castle. Down near the beach is the Castillo Bil-Bil, which with its red facade is a stunning example of the Moorish architectural style. For anyone interested in Asian culture, the Buddhist Stupa will be a highlight, a monument which is the largest of its kind in the western world. The watchtowers of Torrebermeja, Torrequebrada and Torremuelle are reminders of the time when the inhabitants of the coastline were under constant threat from pirates.

If you don’t mind heights, then take the Teleferico Benalmádena cable car up Mount Calamorro to enjoy amazing views as far as Gibraltar. From here there are several hiking trails that offer more stunning views and lead through the beautiful nature of the area. The elaborately landscaped Paloma park is also worth a visit. Alternatively, several amusement parks are in the area, such as Tívoli World, SeaLife and the Selwo Marina Dolphinarium. Those who prefer to visit our swimming friends in their natural habitat can book excursions out to the open sea at the harbour.

In addition to this, there is an almost limitless range of water-sports activities, many leisure options for the whole family and an enormous selection of bars, snack bars and restaurants offering local and international food and drink. A large proportion of these attractions are located on or near Paseo Maritimo, the road which stretches along the coast. For most of its nine kilometres it runs along the beaches of the town, with its pedestrian area forming the beach promenade.
